Everton set sights on ‘unbelievable’ £9m midfielder with ‘a goal in him’

Everton have reportedly rekindled their interest in Burnley’s Josh Brownhill ahead of the January transfer window.

The Toffees could do with bolstering their midfield ranks, and Sean Dyche has apparently set his sights on one of his previous charges.

According to Football Transfers, Everton are prioritising a new central midfielder and are likely to look at the loan market for reinforcements.

Brownhill could be a relatively inexpensive option for the Toffees, as his contract runs out at the end of the season.

The Clarets have the option of selling the 28-year-old in January to avoid losing him for nothing in the summer.

At the same time, Burnley may well opt to keep Brownhill as they look to survive relegation from the Premier League, which would obviously be a lot more profitable.

Dyche signed the midfielder for the Clarets in January 2020, taking him to Lancashire from Bristol City for a reported £9million.

Brownhill has made 17 appearances in all competitions this term, including 16 in the Premier League. He has three goals in the top flight, plus an assist in the Carabao Cup.

His overall record for his current club reads 149 appearances, 13 goals and 15 assists.

And in terms of his entire career, Brownhill has 400 competitive senior appearances to his name, along with 39 goals and 32 assists.

Everton eyeing ‘unbelievable’ Josh Brownhill

Former boss Lee Johnson waxed lyrical about Brownhill when he was at Bristol City, saying he looked like a future star.

“First and foremost, Josh is just an unbelievable lad,” Johnson said, as per the Bristol Post in 2019.

“He’s been a very good student and I took him on loan to Barnsley and could see a superstar in the making.

“He can tackle, he can get up and down, he’s bright with his football brain.

“He’s got a goal in him, he has good set-piece delivery and free-kicks from the edge of the box.

“He’s the first in and last out and every day he comes in and tries to get better.

All in all, Brownhill seems like a decent signing for Everton. Dyche knows him well, he has shown he has what it takes to do well in the Premier League and shouldn’t be too expensive if Burnley agree to sell him.

However, the latter point could be a big issue. He’s been a key player for the Clarets, and if they sell him now, they wouldn’t get a massive amount, but losing him could make their battle against the drop even harder.
