Everton believe that they are in pole position to sign Alexandru Cicaldau after scouting the attacking midfielder throughout the season, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (19/7; page 70).

It looks set to be a crucial summer for Carlo Ancelotti. The Toffees have shown some promise during the early stages of the Italian’s tenure, but the side will finish in the Premier League’s bottom half this term.

The Goodison Park faithful will be hoping for some marquee additions during the coming weeks. But it also appears that the club have their eye on what could prove to be a bargain move.

The Sunday Mirror (19/7; page 70) is reporting that Everton are battling Sampdoria for Cicaldau, who has scored 15 goals and contributed eight assists in the league this season.

Remarkably, the Mirror adds that the 23-year-old will cost just £3.5 million to sign the CSU Craiova starlet. It is also suggested that Everton believe that they are leading the charge for his signature.

Everton fans may feel somewhat underwhelmed to hear about links with a player available for just £3.5 million.

But the low fee will take the pressure off. And if he can get anywhere near the tallies he has managed this season, it will quickly look like an inspired piece of business.

The supporters have every right to expect more exciting rumours. But perhaps, landing Cicaldau could also prove to be a masterstroke should Everton manage to secure his signature.
