Everton are reportedly interested in a highly-rated midfielder who earned comparisons with Jordan Henderson last year.

According to Sky Sports, Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffees are considering a summer bid for Sheffield United ace Sander Berge.

The outlet claims that the Blades are planning to keep the majority of their present squad intact, but are aware they may struggle to hang on to the 23-year-old.

United’s relegation is also believed to have prompted a significant reduction in Berge’s release clause – from £45million to £35million.

Berge was an important part of the Blades side that finished in the top half of the table last season after his £22.5million move to the Premier League in January 2020.

However, the Norway international was sidelined for more than four months due to a hamstring injury, and he was missed by United as they lost their battle against relegation.

Berge made his long-awaited return to action at the start of May, playing the second half of the 4-0 defeat to Tottenham, and is expected to feature against Crystal Palace this weekend.

Former United boss Chris Wilder waxed lyrical about the 6ft 4in ace, telling VG, as translated by Teamtalk: “I just have to say it: Sander has been unique.

“He is the one who has stood out for us. He is a complete midfielder. He can play as an 8 and as 6. He can play in different formations.

“The wonderful thing about Sander is his attitude. He could say that he wants to play one place and no other, but he sees no disadvantage in being versatile.

“Complete midfielders are like that. Look at Jordan Henderson. Sander should gain enormous confidence that he can play so well in various positions in the Premier League.”
