Everton reportedly eye manager that predicted Tom Davies would become a 'superstar' back in 2017

It has been a tumultuous 24 hours for Everton fans. On Tuesday evening, Carlo Ancelotti confirmed his Everton exit and joined Real Madrid – a move that sees him return after leaving in 2015. Now, Everton are said want Rangers boss Steven Gerrard – and his Tom Davies claim is interesting.

The Athletic have made the surprise claim that 41-year-old Gerrard is on a list of targets for the Everton board. Of course, Gerrard has been excellent in his first three years of senior management – guiding a Rangers side to the Scottish Premiership title and stopping Celtic from achieving 10 in a row.

Before Rangers, Gerrard worked as a pundit for BT Sport during a short period – alongside his work as Liverpool’s Under-18’s manager. The now-Rangers boss is earning rave reviews for his work in Scotland, which has also seen Rangers become an established Europa League outfit.

Little surprise, then, that Everton want Gerrard. However, the surprise is that the Toffees want a Liverpool legend – Liverpool fans gave their opinion on twitter. Time will tell. But his prediction that Davies would become a ‘superstar’ are clearly interesting, and can be taken in two ways.

“The one to be excited about at Everton is Tom Davies, who seems to have broken in and stayed in. Terrific footballer, scored a few exciting goals,” Gerrard said – as per The Express in 2017. “He has announced himself and basically said to a regular starter: ‘I am taking your place. I am staying in there.’ They are the ones that usually go on to become superstars.”

Gerrard’s Davies claim is either wrong, or it is exciting for Everton

It is easy to look at Gerrard’s comments and say, well, he got that wrong. Davies is a good player – no doubt. An England Under-21 regular and good cover for the likes of Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and others. But he is hardly a starting midfielder – and some way off being a midfield superstar.

However, if Gerrard joins Everton – a move that would shock many – then those comments could be exciting. Gerrard obviously saw something in £12million-rated (Mail) Davies and that could still be there – but just needs unlocking. If Gerrard joins Everton, perhaps he can draw it out of Davies.
