Everton are in talks to bring back former manager and current Belgium coach, Roberto Martinez, to Goodison Park as Rafa Benitez’s replacement, although Wayne Rooney is also being considered by the Toffees.

The Everton board are looking to act quickly after pulling the trigger on Benitez this weekend. A whole host of names have been linked in the last 24 hours. But according to The Athletic, it is the name of Martinez which has gathered most momentum. The Athletic report Everton have now offered the job to Martinez, who is mulling over whether to make the jump back into club football.

Belgium are hoping that Martinez stays fully focussed on leading them into the World Cup in December. However, it’s widely known that the Spaniard wants a return to club football.

Martinez is said to be hoping to do both roles if he can. His current contract with Belgium ends after the World Cup. At that point he could then go back into full-time management if the situation suited.

Everton are hoping to make a quick appointment to stem the tide of miserable results of late. The Toffees have won just one game since September. Martinez managed Everton for 143 games in his first spell, winning 62. He made his name at Wigan, winning the FA Cup and earning adulation off Dave Whelan, who labelled Martinez ‘brilliant’ for his work with the Latics.

TBR’s View: Everton Fans Might Not Be Too Excited At Martinez Return

There are some good managers out there and Roberto Martinez is one of them. But you do sense this appointment will fall flat with some Toffees fans.

Rafa Benitez was always a big risk anyway and so it’s panned out that way. And now with Martinez potentially coming back, it represents another risky play from the Everton board. There’ll be some who feel that ship has sailed, while Martinez might feel there’s unfinished business.

Crucially, Martinez would need a good start. If he has a nightmare few games in charge, then the atmosphere would quickly turn sour again you feel.
