Everton’s misery yesterday was compounded after the game by a red card shown to central defender Kurt Zouma. The Frenchman is now suspended for Everton’s game with Cardiff City on the 26th.
Everton could face something of a centre-back crisis for that game. Currently, Yerry Mina and Phil Jagielka are also out injured. Whilst one or both could perhaps be in contention in just over a fortnight’s time, Everton boss Marco Silva should still consider making a change.
Talented young defender Morgan Feeney has been in fine form for the under-23s this season. The 20-year-old from Bootle has overcome double knee surgery to become David Unsworth’s captain in a successful Everton youth side.
Unsworth is a massive fan of the talented defender and sung his praises to the official Everton website last month, explaining why he has been used as captain this campaign.
“Morgan’s performance was outstanding. You can see his qualities as a player.
“But you also look at his organisation and leadership – you can hear him shouting more than me sometimes, and I can shout pretty loud.
“But that is why he is captain. He was terrific.”
With Zouma out and his first-team replacements potentially injured, Silva now has a perfect chance to give Feeney a chance.
Everton’s season is dwindling to a disappointing finish. They are out the cups, out of European contention but surely safe from the relegation dogfight.
It gives Silva the perfect chance to give young blood a chance and Everton fans know full well of the talents in the under-23 setup.
Feeney is just one of them. But the opportunity appears to be there for the captain of the under-23s to get his chance in the Everton first-team again.
