Everton had a busy transfer deadline day, with three deals going over the line in the final hour on Thursday. Bernard arrived on a free transfer whilst a double raid on Barcelona saw them bring in both Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes. The former arrived at the club on a permanent deal, but Gomes is only at the club on loan until the end of the season.
It looks a great deal for Everton. The Portuguese midfielder was an expensive recruit for Barcelona in 2016. The Catalan side swooped to sign Gomes after excellent form at previous club Valencia.
But Everton fans should be warned, because Gomes has been out of form for some time.
Gomes played just 16 games for Barcelona in La Liga last season after falling out of favour with the Ernesto Valverde and, it seems, the Barcelona fans.
The Nou Camp faithful were not exactly disappointed to see Gomes head out the exit door last week. His poor performances were not helped by his body language which, suggests a lack of effort. It is probably not true, just the way he plays the game. It is similar to the way Everton fans feel about their £22 million man Morgan Schneiderlin. They know what he can do on his best days, so when he has such a sustained period of poor form, like last season, the fans get on his back.
Gomes is extremely similar in style and will also be easy to chastise when things go wrong. Everton fans must give him the chance to improve, as Schneiderlin has in the past few months.
