Everton are using their midweek without a game to schedule a friendly to offer some gametime to their fringe players.
Marco Silva’s Toffees host Gor Mahia at Goodison Park tonight in a friendly that is sure to keep the sponsors happy; but from a football perspective, it can be used to give some fringe players some gametime.
As Silva’s Goodison revolution takes shape, he has built around a reasonably settled team which means that fringe players are in need of gametime if they are to be sharp when called upon.
However, such stunts would likely not be needed if Everton had not blown their chance in the EFL Cup.
The Toffees blew a substantial chance to clinch some silverware with their worst result of the season, that penalty shoot-out defeat to struggling Southampton.
The Saints could yet make the quarter-finals but for Everton’s fringe players, that early exit from the competition will rob them of opportunities for gametime; that’s why they need meaningless mid-season friendlies like tonight’s.
That said, the match does offer some players an opportunity to impress the manager. With the team playing so well, this might be as good a chance as they get for some time.
