Everton’s under-21 team took on Mansfield Town in the EFL Trophy last night and picked up an impressive penalty shoot-out win against the League Two side. Plenty of Everton’s top young talents were on show, including those that have caught the eye of fans in pre-season such as Anthony Gordon, Dennis Adeniran and Ryan Astley.
But one player who did not feature was Lewis Gibson. The 19-year-old defender was not in the squad for the game. So could Everton fans see him get a first-team berth tonight?
Everton take on Lincoln City in the EFL Cup this evening and Gibson is clearly knocking on the first-team door.
He impressed in pre-season and has been training with Marco Silva’s first-team this campaign.

With Silva likely to ring the changes for tonight’s game, the likes of Djibril Sidibe and Mason Holgate will be hoping to start in the back-line.
Gibson, who can play at both left-back or centre-back, might not be in line to start the game, but it would certainly be no surprise to see him in the squad.
As reported by The Sun, the deal to bring the England youth star to Goodison Park from Newcastle United could be worth up to £6 million. So Gibson is something of an investment from the club.
Injuries have stifled his progress at Finch Farm in the past but this summer appeared to be his breakthrough. If he features against Lincoln this evening it will hopefully be the start of a fruitful career with Everton.
