Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell is closing in on a loan move to Derby County, according to the Derby Telegraph.
They report that the English midfielder completed a medical with the Rams last night and is in Florida, ready to link up with his new team-mates on their pre-season tour.
The signing will be Phillip Cocu’s first in charge of his new club and represents another chance for Dowell to impress away from Goodison Park.
Dowell went to the European Under-21 Championship during the summer and his talent is not in question – but he has as yet been unable to force his way into the Toffees’ first team plans.
Dowell must be wondering whether he will ever make the grade at Goodison Park, where there is already a bloated raft of midfield talent for Marco Silva to choose from.
Tom Davies looks to be ahead of him in terms of academy graduates making the first team pecking order – but perhaps when the likes of James McCarthy and Morgan Schneiderlin are out of the way, Dowell will be able to establish himself.
A loan spell at Derby did wonders for the reputation of Harry Wilson and Mason Mount, of Liverpool and Chelsea respectively, and Dowell will hope he can elevate himself in a similar way.
