Everton striker Cenk Tosun has claimed that reported Toffees target Ugurcan Cakir has what it takes to play in the Premier League.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton are one of several English teams interested in the Trabzonspor goalkeeper.
Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, plus Italian side Roma, are also believed to be in pursuit.
Cakir has won plenty of plaudits this season for his impressive displays, which have helped his side to the top of the Turkish Super Lig table on goal difference.
Leicester City scout Lee Congerton, meanwhile, previously told the Karadeniz Gazete: “One of the best goalkeepers I have seen in my life.”
As for Tosun, in conversation with Ajansspor, he said: “Turkey has very good footballers… who can go to the Premier League from Turkey? I can say Ugurcan Cakır, he comes to mind.”
While Jordan Pickford has been Everton’s number one for a number of years now, his form over the past two seasons has come under some scrutiny and as such, his position can’t exactly be considered completely safe.
Maarten Stekelenburg, meanwhile, is approaching his 38th birthday, while Joao Virginia is still only 20, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Carlo Ancelotti look at strengthening in between the sticks.
While Liverpool are thought to be frontrunners – Cakir’s former coach, Sadi Tekelioglu, recently told Ajannspor: “Liverpool will transfer Ugurcan Cakır at the end of the season” – they already have quite a few stoppers in their ranks.
Tottenham could also do with some new blood in their goalkeeping ranks, but Everton surely stand a good chance of getting Cakir’s services when you factor in the salary they could be willing to pay him, the potential of first-team football, and silverware ambition.
