Could Everton make a surprise loan move for Chelsea’s Diego Costa?

Everton boss Ronald Koeman has hinted that he could make a late summer transfer window move for Chelsea striker Diego Costa. Costa is expected to leave the reigning Premier League champions imminently, and when quizzed on whether he would be looking for permanent or temporary additions, Koeman told The Sun:

“Is this about Costa? Of course you like to sign players for the future, but if you can get the best one that way, then why not? That’s for six months, the season, two years. It’s difficult because it needs to be a quality player, or a young player who can develop or improve. We have the possibility maybe to sign good players, but we don’t play in the Champions League – and that sometimes makes things very difficult.”

With Costa being strongly linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, who are under a transfer ban until January, a loan move could suit both Atletico and Costa if Everton were to pursue it.

What would Costa bring to Goodison Park?

Goals, strength and experience. Similar to previous centre forward Romelu Lukaku in many ways, his game revolves around physically bullying opposition defenders out of his way and his prolific record in the Premier League and across Europe shows just how successful it can be.

Costa could also work alongside the likes of Wayne Rooney to help the younger players in the squad, like Sandro Ramirez and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, to take their game to the next level.

Is a move likely?

Costa clearly has his heart set on a move to Atletico Madrid, with The Telegraph claiming that he could even fly to Madrid, ignoring demands from Chelsea to return to training, in order to force through a move. They quote him as saying:

“My destination is already made. I must return to Atletico Madrid. It turns out that there is the impasse that Chelsea does not want to release me. But I believe that this situation will be resolved now on my return to Spain.”

However, the Spanish club are under a transfer ban, which could open the door to a potential loan move. Given that it is a World Cup year, it is hard to imagine that even Costa would be happy to miss half a season of action sitting on the sidelines until Atletico can register players in January.

Everton remain on the look out for a prolific goalscorer, particularly after injury to Sandro Ramirez, and Diego Costa could fit that mould permanently. With an impressive Premier League track record, he could fit in, though his disruptive attitude may put Ronald Koeman off.
