Everton are reportedly facing stiff competition from Napoli for Lille defender Gabriel as the Brazilian continues to shine for the French club – and the Toffees missing out on the centre-back would hand Liverpool a huge boost.
Italian outlet TransferMarketWeb claim Napoli have joined Everton in the race to sign the 22-year-old defender. Everton are in advanced talks to land the uncapped Brazilian, but it is believed Napoli have reached an agreement with Lille.
It is unsurprising that Napoli are looking to sign a central defender. Gennaro Gattuso will be more than aware that 28-year-old beast Kalidou Koulibaly is likely to leave the Serie A side in the coming months, and Gabriel is likely to be his replacement.
Liverpool, as per TuttoMercatoWeb, are keen on landing 28-year-old Koulibaly this summer with the Reds open to selling Joel Matip. It is believed that Koulibaly is available for £70million, if Foot Mercato’s report is to be believed.
With Koulibaly likely to leave and Liverpool expected to make a move for the 33-time Senegal international, Napoli want Gabriel to replace him. Bringing in a replacement for Koulibaly is likely to see Napoli much more willing to sell Koulibaly.
So, Everton losing out to Napoli in the race to sign Gabriel would see the Italian club more open to Koulibaly’s exit – and that means Everton’s failure could be Liverpool’s gain.
