Everton have seemingly eyed up a potential replacement for Idrissa Gana Gueye already in the form of Mainz powerhouse Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

Foot Mercato is reporting that Everton are targeting the Ivory Coast international and that the German side could be willing to sell him for a fee in the region of €35 million (£31.2m).

The report claims he is a long-term target of Everton’s sporting director Marcel Brands. They claim that Brands had previously tried to sign the player when he was the transfer guru at Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

It would certainly seem to be a transfer that suits Everton needs and fans can definitely see why Gbamin might be a Goodison Park target.

The player’s agent Bernard Collignon has since told Le Parisien that his client was ‘attracted’ by the idea of joining Everton.

“Jean-Philippe is attracted by the idea of joining Everton. To discover the championship of England in a club of the top part of table would represent for him a very beautiful opportunity and a very good step.”

It is also worth noting that Gbamin is an extremely flexible option. Whilst he developed into a holding midfielder last season, he is also a very capable central defender.

With Everton in danger of not bringing Kurt Zouma back to the club after his loan spell from Chelsea, Gbamin could also provide extra cover in that role.

Everton fans will undoubtedly hope a deal for the 23-year-old can be done, especially if Gueye is on his way to PSG.
