Everton were linked with plenty of names this summer. One such player was Spanish striker Rodrigo. The Valencia striker had just had perhaps the best season of his career and was being linked with a host of clubs.
The reports emerged in Italy. The suggestion was Everton had a long-standing interest in the Spaniard, along with Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur.
However, it soon became clear that Rodrigo would be going nowhere, when Valencia manager Marcelinho claimed he would not be leaving for a penny less than €120 million (£107 million), as per his release clause.

Rodrigo ended up heading to the World Cup with Spain this summer and also scored two goals against Everton in a 3-2 pre-season triumph.
Now he is showing why Everton were right to be interested in the summer.
“The idea, of course, is that we intend to start the season with Rodrigo; the club has stated that there is a release clause and anybody who wants to sign him will have to pay it. If a club comes in and the player wants to leave then there isn’t much we can do. But I’m not thinking about that and I’m not going to concern myself too much with it but if that happens there is nothing we can do to change the situation.”
The 27-year-old, who had a loan spell at Bolton Wanderers early in his career, is enjoying fine form during the international break.
He scored the winner against England in Spain’s 2-1 win at Wembley. He then scored in the shock 6-0 thrashing of World Cup finalists Croatia. He also bagged an assist for Saul Niguez in the England tie, playing the full 90 minutes in both games.
Sure Everton were right not to splash £107 million one player. The Toffees are also very pleased with the signature of Richarlison, who has looked good for the club so far.
However, Rodrigo would undoubtedly have been a dream signing for Everton this summer.
