Everton legend Tim Cahill has been discussing the club’s chances of making the top six this season.

The Australian, who spent eight years at Goodison Park, was speaking on Match of the Day 2 when he explained that the club should be looking at finishing in the top six after their recent spending.

“I expect Everton now to challenge in the top six. The spending is fantastic because the fans wanted change, they wanted more investment…

“Silva is making his mark. Now he’s got his players there is an expectation. The expectation from me, as an ex-player, as a fan and from the fans is that six has to be the number…

“‘(It’s) realistic. Why not?”

There is no doubt that Everton’s long-term goal is to break into the top six of the Premier League and become a regular European presence again.

Whilst it may seem like an unlikely task the signs are good that Everton are on the right path.

Marco Silva has done wonders with the team defensively. The Toffees have not conceded a goal at Goodison Park in their last six home fixtures and the club have spent wisely in this summer’s transfer market.

With the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal all in transition phases of their own, this could be the perfect season for Everton to push for a place among the top six in the Premier League.

Hopefully, Cahill’s expectation can become a reality.
