Everton have held talks with Atletico Madrid regarding the potential transfer of full-back Santiago Arias, according to the Spanish club’s sporting director.
The Toffees have made an excellent start to the 2020/21 season, winning their two opening Premier League games and advancing to the third round of the EFL Cup.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side have looked superb so far especially in the final third, with new signings James Rodriguez, Allan, and Abdoulaye Doucoure making a massive difference.
There haven’t yet been any defensive reinforcements though, but that could perhaps soon be on the agenda.
Atleti chief Andrea Berta has now said that his club are talking with a few teams regarding the possible sale of Colombia international Arias – with Everton in the mix.
He told Kicker: “We’re talking to Roma, Everton and PSG.”
Football Espana reported last month that Atleti valued Arias at around €15 million/£14 million.
Any move to Goodison Park for Arias is sure to cast doubt on the immediate future of Jonjoe Kenny, who is back at the club after his loan to Schalke in 2019/20.
TBR’s View – Arias and a centre-back
Arias would be a solid addition for Everton and further increase the Colombian contingent with James and Yerry Mina already at the club.
He’s a few years younger than Coleman and could seriously push the Republic of Ireland international for a starting spot.
He’d be a great signing, but it is paramount for Everton to also add another centre-back if they are to make a genuine challenge for Europe in 2020/21.
