Everton are looking to try and get ahead of the game by looking at replacement for Leighton Baines, according to the Liverpool Echo.
But they have also reportedly put the wheels in motion to source a younger replacement for Baines when his current deal does run out.
Lucas Digne took on the first-choice left back mantle with aplomb last season following his arrival from Barcelona, shunting Baines down onto the bench.
And despite the fact that the Toffees have Luke Garbutt, Brendan Galloway and Antonee Robinson on their books on the left hand side of defence, Marco Silva apparently wants to look for external replacements.
Baines’ experience and professionalism will be useful to have around the dressing room if he does commit to another year – and it would also buy Silva some more time to do some scouting if he sticks around.
It’s important that Everton get their recruitment after a few summers of an expensive scattergun policy when they finally became rich after years of penny-pinching, largely during the David Moyes era.
And they’re now showing a foresight that’s been absent before Marcel Brands came to Goodison.
