Everton should hand Seamus Coleman the captain’s armband permanently

This weekend Everton will be without club captain Phil Jagielka for the clash with Southampton in the Premier League. The veteran defender is suspended for three games after picking up a red card against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening day of the season.

Which means somebody else will have to lead Everton out for the fixture.

The easy choice is Leighton Baines. The former England full-back is the most experienced player left in the Everton team.

However, Seamus Coleman looks like he might receive the accolade and rightly so.

The Irishman is a natural born leader and the Everton players have the utmost respect for the swashbuckling full-back. Coleman, who spent much of last season on the sidelines with a horrific leg break, is also the captain of his nation, which means he is more than ready to lead out Everton.

This should not be a temporary appointment either. With the arrival of Yerry Mina and Kurt Zouma, the Toffees are likely to leave Jagielka by the wayside this season.

With Baines also approaching the end of his Everton first-team shelf-life, handing the armband to Coleman makes sense in the long-term.

The perfect man to replace him as captain is undoubtedly Coleman. Marco Silva should give him that honour.
