Everton have made their first signing of the summer with the free transfer of Jonas Lossl.
The Danish stopper was out of contract after two seasons with Huddersfield Town, and the Toffees wasted little time getting him in.
Lossl made 32 appearances in 2018/19, and 72 in total for the Terriers and impressed under his stint at the John Smith’s Stadium.
The former Mainz 05 star’s form waned in the final couple of months of 2018/19 but he largely proved himself to be a capable Premier League stopper.
Lossl will come in on July 1 and is expected to be Jordan Pickford’s understudy, suggesting talented youngster Joao Virginia could now be set for a loan spell.
Unless veteran Maarten Stekelenburg departs this summer, Portugal U21 international Virginia could head out somewhere to get regular game time.
Virginia is a highly promising young player who perhaps needs to be getting experience outside of youth level football now.
Some Everton fans had campaigned for Virginia to be Pickford’s backup next season but the signing of Lossl surely rules that out.
The Liverpool Echo reported that he was set to be promoted to the first-team next term, but Lossl’s arrival could now change that.
His chance will come, but for now it seems right that Virginia secures regular game time away from Goodison Park and eventually comes back to challenge for the number one position.
