On transfer deadline day in the September 2016, Moussa Sissoko was one of the hot commodities on the transfer market.
He had just been a star for France in their run to the European Championship final. However, Newcastle United had just been relegated and he did not want to play in the Championship.
In the end, Sissoko managed to finalise a £30 million move to Tottenham Hotspur. It was a big fee for a player, whose value had been inflated by his Euro 2016 displays.
But Spurs felt he could bring something to the party. In completing a deal, they left Everton disappointed. The Toffees were also in the running for Sissoko.

As reported by the BBC at the time, Everton also had a £30 million bid accepted for the player. But they failed to negotiate personal terms and Sissoko ended up joining Spurs.
For the past two or so years that has not looked like a mistake for Everton. Sissoko has struggled for form and fitness at Spurs.
However, Everton will now be wishing they had completed a deal for the Frenchman. Sissoko has been one of Tottenham’s best players this season, culminating in a fantastic performance against Inter Milan in the Champions League last night.
Everton, instead, had to wait until January to add midfield reinforcement and signed Sissoko’s countryman Morgan Schneiderlin. The Frenchman has struggled since his move from Manchester United and is currently out of the Everton first-team picture.
If only they had managed to secure Sissoko after all.
