Leighton Baines has entered the final few months of his Everton contract and is now in danger of seeing his 13-year spell at Goodison Park come to an end – but Everton fans are desperate for their club to offer him a new deal.
Baines, 35, joined The Toffees way back in the summer of 2007 for £6million (BBC) as a highly-rated 22-year-old that was impressing at Wigan Athletic. He has since gone on to play a whopping 417 times for Everton, but has only managed six outings this term.
However, the 30-time England international has featured in Everton’s last two outings under Carlo Ancelotti – helping Everton go within an inch of getting something against Arsenal. He also helped The Toffees earn a point against Manchester United.
Lucas Digne is, undisputedly, the first-choice left-back at Goodison Park. But having sold Antonee Robinson to Wigan on a permanent basis, Baines is the only other option on the left side of defence.
Luke Garbutt remains out on loan while Cuco Martina is completely surplus to requirements at Everton. So, Baines could be handed a new deal – especially given his involvement in the last couple of games.
Everton fans discussed whether their club should hand Baines a new deal on Twitter, and the majority of Toffees want the veteran to remain at the club – with a view to gaining his coaching badges.
