Reports in Italy appear to have some bad news for Everton from Carlo Ancelotti’s former club Napoli. As reported by TuttoMercatoWeb, Lille defender Gabriel has now agreed terms with Napoli regarding a potential move to Italy.
This is despite many suggesting that Everton have in fact got Gabriel tied down to a deal that will be ratified once the global health crisis has calmed. The Guardian recently reported that a £30 million fee was already agreed between Lille and Everton with the Brazilian all set to make the Goodison Park switch.
So what is going on?
The interest from Napoli is nothing new. The idea he has agreed personal terms is. But Everton fans can take the news, for now, with a pinch of salt.
Firstly, TMW’s report actually reports in a rather vague manner. It states that an agreement with the Brazilian ‘seems to have been reached’. Seems. Not confirmed. It is also clear that Napoli do not have an agreement with his current club Lille, something Everton have tied down.
Italian transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio even seemed shocked when hearing the news. As he told Radio Marte, as relayed by Area Napoli, Gabriel would be a great signing for Napoli but a move to Ancelotti’s Everton still seemed on the cards.
“Gabriel dos Santos Magalhães, Brazilian defender of Lille, they say he can go to Napoli? I know he should go to Carlo Ancelotti of Everton.
“ Would it be good for Napoli? Yes, I repeat: Gabriel is technical, physical and has feet,: it would be an excellent connection.”
So the suggestion Everton have missed out on Gabriel seems hyperbolic for now.
However, there is no doubt that Everton needs to get this deal tied down as soon as possible or interest from Napoli, as well as other rumoured rivals, will become a real threat.
Hopefully, Everton can complete the signing of one of Europe’s most sought after central defenders.
