Everton fans revel in Thibaut Courtois woe before Belgian has last laugh

The Chelsea keeper recently made incendiary comments about Everton keeper Jordan Pickford.

After Belgium defeated England in their final group game last week the Red Devils goalkeeper made some unwarranted incendiary comments toward England and Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

He suggested that Belgium’s goal from Adnan Januzaj would have been a catchable attempt for him. As reported by Metro, the Belgian stated:

“The goalkeeper is 10cm smaller than me. I would have caught it. He was too busy throwing his legs in the air.”

Considering the goalkeeper’s union it was an uncalled for and rather arrogant smear from the Belgian, who received plenty of criticism after his comments.

So when Belgium took on Japan yesterday and went 2-0 down to goals Courtois was within inches of saving, the obvious happened.

Everton fans went on to have a field day. Many were suggesting that the extra weight being carried due to Courtois’ extra height slowed him down. Pickford, they claimed, would have sprung across and saved both goals. Others just made it clear that Courtois was wrong to publicly slate another professional in such a childish manner.

Whilst Everton fans did enjoy Courtois’s moment of peril, the Belgian did have the last laugh. Former Everton manager Roberto Martinez rung the changes, including former Toffee Marouane Fellaini. He scored to make it 2-2 after Jan Vertonghen’s earlier effort. Then a counter-attack launched buy good goalkeeping from Courtois saw Nacer Chadli win Belgium the tie in stoppage time.

But Everton fans have long memories. It will be interesting to see what reception Chelsea get when they visit Everton next year…
