Everton fans revel in the thought they might have cost Liverpool the Premier League title

Everton were the last team to take points off of Liverpool in the Premier League.

Manchester City are Premier League champions after fighting off an incredible challenge from Liverpool. A 4-1 win at Brighton secured a successful title defence for Pep Guardiola’s men.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, it is the draws that have cost them. Seven in the league means their incredible record of just one defeat left them short of City.

For Everton fans, it has afforded them the opportunity to have a gloat.

Liverpool have been rampant in recent weeks. The Reds have won their last nine games in the Premier League but still lost the title by one point. Turning just one of those draws into a win would have secured Liverpool the league title.

The last time they dropped points in the league? That was, unfortunately for the Reds, against their Merseyside rivals.

A 0-0 draw at the start of March has now, in the eyes of many an Everton fan, effectively cost Liverpool the league title.

After the deflating nature of the 1-0 defeat at Anfield, where Jordan Pickford’s error handed Divock Origi his first winning moment of the campaign, Everton fans are understandably clinging to the idea they might have cost Liverpool the title.

Of course, there is far more nuance to what has been perhaps the highest quality Premier League title race on record.

But perhaps, just for today, Everton fans can feel they did a number on their oldest rivals…
