Of Everton’s first-choice attackers this season, Theo Walcott has been on the worst form and that gave rise to calls for the experienced Englishman to be dropped by Marco Silva.
The most obvious replacement for the former Arsenal wideman is a player at the opposite end of his career, promising Young Lion Ademola Lookman.
Lookman impressed in Germany during the second half of last season, forging the path for Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson to do the same this time around, but has remained at Goodison Park to fight for his place.
Until last night’s visit of Newcastle United, Silva had not granted Lookman a start, forcing him to impress off the bench, but he replaced Walcott in the starting eleven against Rafa Benitez’s side.
Lookman finally had the chance he wanted and his direct opponent at left back was Javier Manquillo, who struggled badly in the Magpies’ 3-0 home defeat against West Ham on Saturday, but he failed to take advantage.
It was a faltering Everton display, perhaps showing signs of tiredness from Sunday’s Merseyside derby and Lookman was not able to impress.
There is patience among the Everton fans, but some are frustrated he didn’t grab his chance to shine last night while others feel he may have been built up too much just because of Walcott’s poor form…
Gomes MOM again.
Whilst he can't be judged on one game, the Lookman experiment didn't work last night. But, to be fair, he needs more than one start to see if it will, which I'm sure it will.
Bigger conundrum is on the left. I want Richarlison back there but what about Bernard?

Lookman was average going forward and gives little going backwards. Walcott may have not been brilliant this season but offers far more helping out defensively. Lookman has been built up into something that he is not.

Annoyingly Lookman was nothing more than decent and although Bernard had a good derby match, he also seems great at wasting good opportunities. He always slips over in an important moment right? 😂 That along with Tosun looking way off the pace in comparison to the rest now

Definitely Lookman looks pretty on the ball but just doesn’t have the physicality to win the ball in a scrap

See lookman got his chance 🤨🤔

I don’t think Walcott is good enough but the times Lookman has had a chance he hasn’t done nothing
