Everton fans react to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s comments on goalscoring record

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has said he wasn’t concerned about his extended period without a goal before finding the back of the net against Bournemouth on Sunday.

As per the Liverpool Echo, the striker said he remained confident in his own ability to get back on the goal trail, and his faith has just been boosted by the strike at the Vitality Stadium.

Asked if the goal drought concerned him, he said: “Not really, no. I’m confident in my ability so as long as I’m confident on the pitch I’m sure I’ll score goals. Every day the manager speaks to me about what he wants from me as a striker.

“Obviously he picked me to lead the line (at Bournemouth) and has shown confidence in me. When you hit the back of the net you gain confidence. Personally it was disappointing to come off when we were chasing a goal but that’s the way it is.”

Some Everton fans took to Twitter to say they had been concerned about Calvert-Lewin’s lack of goals and they weren’t pleased by the fact he wasn’t.

But what the Englishman appeared to mean is he wasn’t losing confidence in himself during that time, which shows a mental strength he will need if he is to make the grade at Everton.

If he had said he was tearing his hair out and getting anxious, it might have been a more outward display of passion but it still wouldn’t be especially helpful in terms of getting back among the goals.

Either way, Calvert-Lewin needs to build on his weekend goal because he cannot let another goal drought happen – not with Everton trying to push for the top six and Moise Kean pushing for his place.
