Everton fans react on Twitter to Mason Holgate’s display against Chelsea
A number of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Mason Holgate’s display as the Toffees beat Chelsea at Goodison Park on Saturday.
It has not been the easiest time for Holgate. He went into Saturday’s clash having been an unused substitute in two of the Toffees’ previous three games.

The 24-year-old was recalled for the visit of the Blues. But he was handed a tough task with Carlo Ancelotti selecting the former Barnsley man at right-back.
It is a position that Holgate knows well. But given the attacking quality Chelsea possess, it looked to be a risk, particularly with another centre-back deployed at left-back in Ben Godfrey.

However, the decision proved to be a masterstroke. Everton kept their first Premier League clean sheet since the opening day. And Holgate was immense.
As shown by Whoscored.com, he made two successful tackles. There was also eight clearances and two interceptions.
Crucially, there was also a superb stoppage-time burst up the pitch to run the clock down. Holgate got all the way to the corner before being dispossessed.
‘Exceptional’
And his performance prompted plenty of Everton fans to take to social media to laud the defender. Understandably, he was not the only player receiving praise.
But, as one supporter noted, it looked to be the kind of performance that reminded everyone of how good he can be. It is remarkable to remember that he cost just £2 million, according to ESPN.
With that in mind, here is what some of the fans were saying about Holgate’s display…
Ben Godfrey is some player, Holgate and Keane absolute brilliant today also. Needed that clean sheet #efc

Michael Keane excellent as well, but special mention for Holgate and Godfrey, playing out of position against the second-highest scorers in the league.
The two of them just love defending, don’t they? #EFC pic.twitter.com/jQyJyLJT4X

Great result tonight. Two points off the Champions League spots. Allan, Holgate, Godfrey all excellent MOTM shouts. DCL brilliant to bully Silva for the penalty. More of this on Wednesday at Leicester #UTFT #EFC #EVECHE

Holgate was injured for so long I really forgot how good he was. Even playing at RB today he just bossed it. World class CB in the future. Same with Godfrey. So versetaile and quick for a center half.
