Everton took on Aston Villa on Friday night and put in an alarmingly toothless display against the newly-promoted side.
The Toffees fanbase was certainly not impressed. After the game, plenty of the usual suspects got the blame on Twitter.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was anonymous in attack, Gylfi Sigurdsson sluggish throughout whilst Richarlison has had a poor start to the new campaign. Then there was the late miss from Theo Walcott which did not help his already failing popularity at Goodison Park.
But another player receiving plenty of heat online was Andre Gomes.
With good reason as well. The Portuguese midfielder put in perhaps his worst performance yet in an Everton shirt.
His passing was wayward, decision making skewed and defensively he struggled to contain the Aston Villa midfield throughout.
Some Everton fans are now concerned that Gomes might have only looked so slick and classy last season because of the hard work Idrissa Gana Gueye did beside him.
Hopefully, the Portuguese star can rediscover his form for Everton’s next Premier League clash with Wolves…
I notice that a player had an off night and he’s getting belters off all and sundry now. Welcome to Everton Mr Gomes. #efc

Atrocious #efc Gomes was the worst of a pretty bad bunch tonight

Gomes confidence was shattered by Jota. Jota really had the beating of him and he was really frustrated to the point where he should of been subbed

Agreed. But Gomes being that bad last night was a complete shock. Let’s hope we can get his head right immediately.
As for the team, in three games I’ve seen a lot of what concerned me last season repeated.

Gomes was poor yesterday but when you take the energy away from him (Gana) his job becomes even harder. Clearly still carrying a knock and nothing was coming off despite that he never shyed away from the ball. I would of brought Davies on tbh he would of injected energy. #efc

I can’t physically believe how bad Sigurdsson and Calvert-Lewin are at footy.
Not arsed the DCL works hard and is sound behind the scenes. He’s shite.
Andre Gomes with the worst off day I’ve ever seen.
Mick Keane bringing out his 17/18 form.
Richarlison ineffective again.

Andre Gomes needs that safe player next to him. He badly misses Gueye, and I think Delph coming back will help him no end.
No excuse for being as bad as last night, though. #efc

Blame the usual all you want but fan favourite gomes stunk the place out. Worst player on the pitch by a country mile. Embarrassing performance from him tonight

Gomes must not be allowed to go the same way as Schneiderlin. Similar to Palace but Villa were far more clinical, and it’s not a partnership that’ll work.
They were having their own personal tussle over who could look the slickest crab. Gueye will have been shaking his head #EFC

Anyone else a little worried how Gomes has started the season?
— Gareth B (@efc3340) August 23, 2019
Andre Gomes should have been hooked for Tom Davies at half time. He was the worst player on the pitch in BOTH halves. #EFC
