Everton’s under-21 side are through to the next round of the EFL Trophy after a 2-2 draw with Crewe Alexandra, which was eventually won by the League Two side on penalties.
Although, despite the idea being Everton’s youngsters would catch the eye, it was actually a long-forgotten Everton senior player who scored both of the Toffees goals at Gresty Road.
Everton fans would certainly be forgiven for believing that Oumar Niasse was no longer a Goodison Park player. His last game for the club was in December last year as Everton lost to Brighton in the Premier League.

Signed for a reported (Sky Sports) £13.5 million the Senegalese striker has been something of a disappointment on Merseyside. The Roberto Martinez signing struggled to settle initially and Ronald Koeman’s arrival saw him dropped from the squad altogether. Koeman later reversed that decision but Niasse has spent most of his time out on loan, with spells at Hull City and Cardiff City, or playing in the reserves.
So Everton fans were certainly surprised to see that he was scoring goals for the under-21s yesterday evening.
It has to be said that Niasse, who also converted in the penalty shoot-out, could have had more goals were he a little more match-fit.
His goalscoring antics certainly made waves on Everton twitter feeds. Many, with tongue firmly in cheek, suggested he might be in line for a first-team recall this weekend. Others found the situation less than amusing, wondering why Niasse was rotting in the reserves and taking opportunities away from young talents.
