It seems Idrissa Gana Gueye was simply not going to allow Everton team-mate Richarlison all the international glory this week.
Richarlison netted Brazil’s third and final goal in a 3-1 Copa America final win over Peru at the weekend.
But not to be outdone, Gueye has just booked Senegal’s place in the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations.
The Teranga Lions defeated Benin 1-0 in a tight affair last night with Everton’s midfield general getting the winning goal.
The assist came from a Merseyside rival. Sadio Mane tricked his way around the Benin defence before laying off a surging Gueye from midfield. The Everton midfielder burst into the box before firing a fine finish beyond the despairing Benin keeper.
It was heartache for the brave Squirrels side who were not expected to reach this stage of the competition.
For Gueye however, it was an excellent goal and one which takes Senegal to their first AFCON semi-final in 13 years.
The Everton midfielder, who has been heavily linked with PSG this summer, does not score many so his heroics were certainly noteworthy.
He will now hope to continue delaying his return to Everton by defeating either Madagascar or Tunisia in the semi-final next week.
Here is some of the best reaction to Gueye’s international heroics from Twitter…
Gueye still playing is worrying as the team are already in Pre season. But as he’s the comply athlete I will stop worrying #EFC

Idrissa Gueye the most improved player under Marco Silva? A cracking goal for Senegal this evening.
If not, who is? DCL? Keane?
