Arsenal got their Premier League campaign off to a flyer yesterday, with a 3-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.
But it was a game that caught the attention of Everton fans, and not just those who still appreciate seeing Mikel Arteta performing wonders.
Plenty of Everton fans were also tuning in to see what all the fuss was about regarding Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes.
Everton were heavily linked with a move to sign the talented centre-back from Lille this summer. In fact, before the global health crisis through everything into disarray, it appeared a deal to sign Gabriel was as good as done.
Back in April, The Guardian was one of several outlets suggesting the deal for Everton to sign Gabriel was essentially done. The fee was set to be in the region of £30 million and the player had already completed a medical with the club.
However, as lockdown rumbled on, other clubs took notice, including Arsenal. The Gunners eventually snapped him up for a reported (Sky Sports) £27 million.
Yesterday, the 22-year-old made his Arsenal debut and certainly did not disappoint.
Recovering from an early mix-up with goalkeeper Bernd Leno, the centre-back put in a brilliant display at the back and even managed to score on his debut with a powerful header.
For some Everton fans, it was a disappointing moment as they realise the transfer opportunity that has passed them by.
Others preferred to be more optimistic, realising that without the money saved on Gabriel. Everton would never have pulled off an eye-catching raid for James Rodriguez this summer.
Watched some of the Arsenal game, we should have gone all out to get Gabriel, he looks top drawer. I know it was only Fulham, still looked the business imo.

Reading some OTT reactions here after a half for Gabriel and dread to think what could be said tomorrow about our new lads if they play. Remember it takes time to bed in some haven’t played a game for a number of weeks to. No overreactions if we don’t click day one please. UTFT!!

Because we did not get Gabriel, we had spare cash available to get James Rodriguez. I’m fine with that 🤷♂️😁think Arsenal are very underrated this year. Top 4 imo. Arteta doing a good job.

Please Evertonians don’t stress yourselves added stress about Gabriel scoring for Everton. Carlo told us all this week he only wants players that are committed and want to play for us. Gabriel wasn’t and didn’t and hasn’t so let it go save your bitterness for our red friends 😂

Gabriel looking good for Arsenal today and now a goal on his debut. Everton got James Rodriguez though so I’m choosing to ignore it.

It was pretty obvious Gabriel was gonna be good for Arsenal. Carlo wanted him for Napoli and then Everton, there was no doubt he’s a talent.
