Everton fans react as Christian Atsu almost dents Liverpool title chase

Everton fans briefly hoped their former player could dent Liverpool’s hopes.

Newcastle United gave it their absolute all yesterday against Liverpool, in a game the Reds needed to win to continue their title race.

But when Virgil van Dijk headed the Reds into an early lead many felt the writing was on the wall. Instead, Newcastle fought back. They fought back from a goal down twice in the game, including from an unlikely source.

Christian Atsu scored his first goal since December 2017 to level things up 1-1.

His goal was not missed by Everton fans. Atsu, of course, had a rather disappointing spell at Goodison Park.

Everton signed Atsu on loan from Chelsea in 2014. Roberto Martinez brought him in hoping he would add some quality into the Goodison Park attack.

Unfortunately, he never really got going.

He played just 13 games in a season disrupted by the African Cup of Nations. After a disappointing display in the 5-2 Europa League loss to Dynamo Kiev, he did not feature for Everton again.

But plenty of Everton fans were cheering when he scored a goal that looked like it might put a spanner in the works for their Merseyside rivals.

Liverpool, however, had the last laugh. Divock Origi, the perennial troller of Everton, may have scored the winner, although it could also go down as a Jamaal Lascelles own goal.

But for a brief moment, Everton fans finally felt like Atsu had made a major commitment to the Toffees’ cause…
