Everton midfielder Andre Gomes has made an astonishing return to action just three months after suffering a fracture-dislocation of his right ankle against Tottenham.
The Portuguese maestro played for an hour of a behind closed doors friendly game organised at the club’s Finch Farm training facility.
It was a game contested of first-team and under-23 players and Gomes played for 60 minutes alongside Gylfi Sigurdsson.
Gomes returning to action will probably intensify his rehabilitation period and in the next few weeks, he could bolster Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.
The 26-year-old signed for the Toffees on a permanent deal in the summer from Barcelona, costing the club £22 million.
Gomes made eight appearances in the Premier League prior to his injury and was just starting to hit some form.
Everton are without defeat in their last five fixtures under Ancelotti, losing just once in the league since the Italian took charge.
Gomes will offer his squad a combative presence and it’ll be interesting to see how the boss utilises Gomes when he is fully fit.
News of a return for the £112,000-a-week midfielder has been met with surprise but delight from Everton supporters.
Several Toffees supporters have taken to Twitter to congratulate the man with 29 caps for his country on his comeback.
Here is a selection of tweets from Everton supporters responding to the update on Gomes:
