Everton’s recent form meant that their chances of stopping Manchester City from going top of the Premier League last night looked slim before kick-off.
And so it proved, with the champions running out 2-0 winners, thanks to goals at the end of each half from Aymeric Laporte and Gabriel Jesus.
The result meant that Liverpool were knocked off the top of the Premier League – which may well please some Evertonians – but the Toffees put in an improved performance than the weekend’s dismal effort against Wolves.
Marco Silva needed that after a poor couple of months; but raising his side’s game for the visit of the champions is one thing – he needs that effort on a consistent basis until the end of the season.

And one player who seized his opportunity to impress the manager was Tom Davies. The local boy has been in and out of the team this season, during a campaign that may have seen him stagnate slightly.
Of course, the instability and new arrivals at the club can’t be helping Davies, but last night he showed what he is all about with a tireless display, where he did not shop showing for the ball, even in esteemed midfield company.
That passion and drive went down well with a fanbase who want to see some signs of positivity from their team and we’ve put together some of the best reaction…
