Everton fans on Twitter: Wayne Rooney's retirement, signing a new striker, Hadjuk Split build-up
The big news of the day for Everton fans came from one of their new signings as Wayne Rooney, who rejoined his boyhood club this summer, announced his retirement from international football in order to focus on his club form.
England’s record goalscorer revealed his decision on his official website, with a statement to Gareth Southgate and fans discussing why he had chose to bring the curtain down on his international career.
Rooney, who had been left out of the last England squad, said: “Now I want to focus all my energies on helping them be successful.”
Aside from Rooney’s retirement, fans had been commenting on Everton’s hunt for a new striker. As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Ronald Koeman is keen to add a new front man and it is suggested that they have been given a price for Benfica’s Raul Jimenez.
The Portuguese club have told the Toffees that they will have to pay £45 million for the Mexico international, a price-tag that seems hugely inflated considering Jimenez’s value to his side.
The striker is often a substitute for Benfica and he has only scored 24 goals in 80 appearances.
Elsewhere, Everton fans have been building in anticipation for their Europa League clash against Hadjuk Split.
Toffees fans have been discussing all three topics on social media, here is what they have had to say on Twitter:
