Everton fans on Twitter loving Iwobi performances under Benitez
A new manager bounce is a common thing in football, with a change of coaching styles helpful for many players.
However, given the backlash to Rafa Benitez‘s appointment at Everton, few would have expected his Goodison start to have been so good.
One of the players who has found his form greatly improve under Rafa this season is former Arsenal man, Alex Iwobi.
The Nigerian international – who signed for the club for a sizable £34m (BBC) – has been imperious so far.
His three appearances this season may be a small sample size, but he’s averaging an impressive 1.7 key passes per game compared to last season’s 0.5.
He’s also shooting more this season, taking 1.3 shots per game to last season’s 0.5 (WhoScored).
Speaking to the Everton website, Iwobi has attributed his upturn in form to the arrival of Benitez:
“The manager is always talking to me and trying to help me. It’s helped me a lot so far this season.”
“It’s not just me, of course, but the whole team.”
“My confidence is playing a big part, too. I’m pushing a bit more up the field and getting involved in attacks. “
“I just need to add more goals and assists.”
“With the manager, he doesn’t give us any rest, he’s onto us 24/7. This is what we need.”
“You can see everyone’s playing with a lot of confidence. That big motivation is there.”
“We’ve started off very well, but we have to keep going until the end. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
These will be some very promising comments for the Toffees to read as they’ll be keen to kick on from the 10th placed finish that former manager Carlo Ancelotti deliver last season.
If Rafa can keep getting these levels from Iwobi and co, you’d certainly back him to do so.

Certainly seems like Rafa has brought squad more together. Not just concentrated on a select few like maybe Carlo did. Iwobi obv along way to go to convince but he has the talent there is no doubt.— Graeme McVeigh (@GraemeMcV) September 8, 2021
