Everton’s under-21s took on Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Trophy last night, losing on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time. The result was however enough to see Everton advance to the next round of the competition. Oumar Niasse caught the eye with a double but there was also a noticeable absentee from the Everton team.
Anthony Gordon, who has been in fine form during the competition so far, was not in the Everton squad.
The 18-year-old, who scored against Mansfield Town in the competition, was not present and that might have some Everton fans excited.

Gordon’s sensational form for the Everton youth-teams has seen many call for him to get a chance in the senior set-up. Indeed, the England youth international has been training with Marco Silva’s men.
So could his absence mean a first-team opportunity is forthcoming when Everton take on Southampton at the weekend?
It certainly appears a possibility. Everton will be without previous absentees Bernard and Jean-Philippe Gbamin for the game. Andre Gomes has now joined that list after his horrific ankle injury and Fabian Delph is also a doubt for the weekend.
It leaves gaps in the first-team that Gordon would surely be first in line to fill.
Those Everton fans clamouring to see Gordon in action for the first-team might just be about to get their wish.
