Everton fans left absolutely outraged by what Virgil van Dijk did right after 2-2 draw vs Liverpool

The last Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park between Everton and Liverpool was a dramatic affair as both sides drew 2-2.

The contest well and truly had everything — goals galore, a sending off and scuffles between players from both sets of teams.

James Tarkowski’s last-gasp equaliser capped off a memorable day for Everton as they took two points away from Liverpool, who are in the quest to win the Premier League title this season.

One man who was seemingly frustrated after the contest was Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk was spotted arguing with referee Michael Oliver during and after the clash as well.

In the aftermath of the contest, Van Dijk also told TNT Sports that for Everton, any derby day is a “cup final” — a comment that did not go down well with the Toffees fans.

Everton fans slate Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk for “cup final” dig

One Everton fan questioned Van Dijk’s comments by asking: “If it was our cup final, why did they rest their star players in the [FA] cup at the weekend [against Plymouth Argyle] whilst we fielded a full 11?”

A second fan accused Van Dijk and Arne Slot, who was sent off against Everton for their lack of sportsmanship after they were spotted having heated arguments with referee Michael Oliver, saying: “Manager and captain showing a complete lack of class.”

A third Toffees supporter referenced the former Southampton centre-back’s comments while positing a picture of Jurgen Klopp running onto the pitch after Divock Origi’s famous last-minute winner against Everton in 2018, captioning the post: “Our cup final though.”

A fourth Everton fan sent a message to Van Dijk, which read: “Our cup final? Fella, they rolled you out to a behind closed doors game just so you could watch them get beat 2-0 [in April 2024].”

A fifth Everton supporter tore Van Dijk to shreds as well, saying: “And just to clarify it definitely was not our cup final! Van Dijk, you are a complete and utter fool!”

Finally, a sixth Everton supporter stated that Van Dijk and his Liverpool teammates were “rattled” despite the Reds skipper suggesting that the opposition considered the game far more important than his side did.

“When Kopite players and fans say this is our cup final, you know they’re rattled.”

Van Dijk said Michael Oliver “didn’t have the game under control” after Everton vs Liverpool

Van Dijk criticised Michael Oliver’s refereeing display against Everton as he felt the experienced official failed to have the game under control.

“They are entitled to celebrate the goal [from Tarkowski].”

“But [Abdoulaye] Doucoure wanted to provoke our fans and Curtis [Jones] thought that wasn’t the right thing to do. Then there was a tussle.”

“The referee didn’t have the game under control, I said that to him. It is a factor. Both teams had to deal with it.”

Van Dijk and Liverpool will now be looking ahead to hosting Wolves at Anfield on Sunday and returning to winning ways.
