Everton fans hail Ben Godrey for performance in Manchester City loss

Everton were beaten by an in-form Manchester City side on Saturday in the FA Cup – but some of the club’s fans on Twitter were extremely impressed by their defender Ben Godfrey for his display.

The Toffees hosted Man City on Saturday evening in the FA Cup quarter-finals, and it looked like the tie would be heading for extra time at one stage.

Unfortunately, Man City broke the deadlock in the 84th minute with Ilkay Gundogan’s goal, before Kevin De Bruyne added a second in the 90th minute to secure a 2-0 victory for the visitors.

It means that Everton’s cup run is over for another season, and all attention now is on trying to finish the league strongly to try secure a European position.

Despite the fact Toffees 21-year-old goalkeeper Joao Virginia was brilliant in net on Saturday, Everton supporters had to an outfield defender.

Godfrey, 23, was once again a colossus in defence with his latest display, and operated as part of a back three.

The English centre-back will now meet up with his nation’s Under-21s side, but it’s easy to see why some have been tipping him for Gareth Southgate’s senior squad.

His aggressive defending really stood out against Man City, which included a brilliant hard tackle on Phil Foden during the second half.
