Everton fans do not want Benitez to sign Maupay

Some Everton fans do not want Rafa Benitez to sign Brighton and Hove Albion ace Neal Maupay.

What’s the story?

According to Sky Sports, the Spaniard wants to sign the Frenchman, however, financial fair play is preventing the Blues.

The Merseysiders are in a position where they need to sell before they can buy anyone.

It has seen the club spend just £1.7m across three summer signings this window.

Asmir Begovic and Andros Townsend have joined the club on free transfers after their respective contracts expired. Meanwhile, Demarai Gray joined for £1.7m from Bayer Leverkusen.

As a result, the club is willing to listen to offers for Jonjo Kenny, Mason Holgate and Jarrad Branthwaite.

Brighton paid £20m for the 25-year-old when he joined from Brentford in 2019. And with two years left on his deal, he’s is likely to cost Everton a hefty fee.

Maupay not worth the massive fee for Everton and Benitez

As stated above, it will take the Blues something ridiculous to sign the 25-year-old this summer.

Two years on his current deal and in great form at the start of this season, the Seagulls are firmly in the driving seat over a transfer.

Graham Potters’ men can demand anything upwards of the £20m they paid Brentford two years ago.

And given the forward’s own inconsistencies, you have to question how if he’s worth more than £20m.

Maupay was far from reliable in front of goal if last season is anything to go by. Despite scoring eight goals, the forward had an expected goal tally of 13.77, according to Understat, meaning he scored five fewer times.

So, would you pay a fee upwards of potentially £30m for a player who is unreliable in front of goal?

Common sense tells you no, but, is it something Everton will take into account given the desperation to sign a forward-thinking player?
