Everton produced a stunning performance to beat Leicester City 2-0 away from home as Carlo Ancelotti got his tactics spot on – and Toffees supporters have raved about the performance of defender Mason Holgate.
The Toffees came into the match with somewhat of a defensive crisis. Both left-back options in Lucas Digne and Fabian Delph were sidelined through injury, while Seamus Coleman and Jean-Philippe Gbamin remain sidelined.
It saw Ancelotti use summer signing Godfrey on the left side of the defence despite the ex-Norwich man being right-footed. He also played right-footed centre-back Holgate at right-back – despite Jonjoe Kenny being on the bench.
Despite the makeshift defence, Everton sparkled at the King Power. A long-range strike from Richarlison was followed by a second from Holgate – his first ever Premier League goal in his 69th top-flight appearance.
Not only did Holgate break his Premier League duck, but the £2million (ESPN) signing was impressive at right-back. It is a role he has played in the past, but perhaps not so much of late – instead being used at centre-back.
Everton supporters took to Twitter after the match to discuss Holgate’s performance and many were delighted with the former Barnsley man’s efforts – WhoScored claim he made more tackles than any of his teammates.
