Everton will face a huge decision on their 23-year-old star if they decide to sign Arek Milik. Reports link them with a move for the Napoli striker.

Neapolitan outlet AreaNapoli claims that Everton want Arek Milik. He’d be cheap, too, at around £14m with another £5m in bonuses and a deal could happen as soon as January.

Milik is out of favour under Rino Gattuso and would, much like James Rodriguez, enjoy a reunion with Carlo Ancelotti. Ancelotti was coaching Napoli in the 18/19 season, of course, where Milik bagged 19 goals.

The AreaNapoli report says Ancelotti remains a big fan of Milik, too, and would like to get a deal done. Doing so would force a big decision on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, however.

Local star

Calvert-Lewin has started the season on fire. The 23-year-old has 11 goals already this season, with eight in seven Premier League games. He looks like a superstar but this is the first time he truly has done.

Calvert-Lewin’s 15 goals last season suggested he had the ability and it appears he’s fulfilling his potential right now. As long as he can do it over the course of the entire season.

Milik, however, could be a safer bet. Ancelotti knows him well and knows how to get him firing over an entire season. The potential with James is huge, too, if everything clicks together.

But that would all take minutes away from Calvert-Lewin – the two are unlikely to play together unless the younger man plays wide or Ancelotti changes his system. And we can’t see Milik leaving to join a club where he sits on the bench most weeks.

Is that the right move long-term? It’s very hard to say. Everton could feel like Milik guarantees them a very good second half of the season and could deliver next year.

But Calvert-Lewin could be their star for the next six or seven years. It would be a very risky decision to jeopardise that by bringing in another no.9.

We’re not sure they should move for Milik without a plan that gets the best out of Calvert-Lewin. The price is great for a very good player but it comes with too big a risk.
