Report: Everton want to appoint 'unbelievable' Englishman as Benitez replacement search starts

Everton have parted company with Rafa Benitez today and the hunt for the Spaniards replacement is already firmly under way at Goodison Park.

A host of early names have been thrown about. Obvious shouts like Duncan Ferguson and Wayne Rooney have been mentioned by some, while a return for Roberto Martinez hasn’t been ruled out either. However, one name now on the list for Everton is Brighton manager, Graham Potter.

According to Sky Sports, Potter is now on the ever-growing list of potential Benitez replacements. Sky broke the news this afternoon, claiming Everton are big admirers of the Brighton boss. Potter, 46, has often been lauded for doing the business with the Seagulls year on year.

7 Footballers Who Refuse To Retire

Potter has impressed many with his slick passing and high-pressing football. And while most seasons there is a hint of relegation worry at the AMEX, Potter has, so far, kept Brighton well clear of real trouble.

Among the high praise for Potter over the years is some from former Seagulls midfielder, Will Buckley. He told the Argus last year how he thought Potter was ‘unbelievable’ for what he’d done at the AMEX. Few in Brighton would argue with that statement, in all honesty.

TBR’s View: Are Everton Right For Potter? Possibly Not

While there is no doubt Everton are a huge club in English football, Potter might well be aiming even higher. The Liverpool job might come up in a few years, while there’s uncertainty at Manchester United too. Even Chelsea, there’s always a chance they’ll move Thomas Tuchel on at any point.

Everton do have some attraction. A big name, a new stadium, and they’ve proven they’ll spend if needed in recent seasons. However, all is not well at board level, and Potter enjoys a good relationship on that front at Brighton.

Potter would be good for Everton. But it depends whether he fancies jumping ship right now.
