Everton deal for Josh Bowler could be good business if £5m clause is activated

It appears Everton youngster Josh Bowler could make a move to Hull City permanent at the end of the season.

As reported by the Hull Daily Mail, the Championship side have the option to buy Bowler for a fee of £5 million next summer.

Of course, some Everton fans might initially be disappointed with that news. Many will remember that a fee not far off that £5 million was reported when Everton snatched Bowler away from QPR.

As reported by Sky Sports in July 2017, the deal to bring Bowler to Everton was worth around £4.25 million. That would make Bowler look like something of a wasted opportunity, with Everton making very little profit off the player.

But the fact is, Everton have not yet paid anything like that for the player. As reported by The Mirror, Everton only paid an initial £1.5 million for the attacking talent.

The rest of the deal was to be made up of add-ons and, considering Bowler is yet to even feature in a senior Everton matchday squad, those are unlikely to have been activated.

So if Everton were to sell Bowler for £5 million it could actually represent a £3.5 million payday for the club. That would certainly have to be considered good business.
