Everton are reportedly one of the teams in the mix to sign Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta this summer.
L’Equipe claim the Frenchman has emerged as a transfer target for the Toffees, as well as Newcastle United, Cardiff City, Southampton and Watford.
The Toffees, along with the other clubs, have apparently lodged a bid for the 6ft 4in colossus, who banged in 14 goals in 34 games in 2018/19.
Mainz have so far stood firm and rejected all approaches for the 21-year-old.
The Bundesliga club are understood to be willing to sell if they received an offer between €35 million to €40 million (£31 million and £35.6 million). So far, they’ve received offers between €20 million and €25 million (£17.8 million and £22.25 million).
Everton’s interest is particularly interesting, with the club having failed to properly replace Romelu Lukaku since he left in 2017.
Everton have really missed Lukaku since they cashed in on him two summers ago.
His pace and power have been a big loss for the Toffees, with Cenk Tosun and Dominic Calvert-Lewin different kind of players.
Mateta is a similar kind of striker to Lukaku in a physical sense – perhaps his style could see him become a hit in English football.
The U21 international is a lethal finisher inside the area, both on the ground and in the air.
His bullish style could be a welcome addition for Everton, who were somewhat ineffective at times in attack last term.
