Everton’s under-23 side recorded a 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League 2 to move four points clear at the top of the league.
And under-23 coach David Unsworth made a point of singling out goalkeeper Mateusz Hewelt for praise after the match.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Unsworth raved about the young stopper, who was voted man of the match after keeping a well-deserved clean sheet.
Unsworth told the club’s official website: “That’s the best I’ve seen him. I’ve told him that. He made saves to keep us in the game and it was a fantastic performance.
“He gave us a platform to go and win the game. His was one of a number of outstanding performances.”
This will surely give the 22-year-old confidence as he tries to make the transition from Everton’s youth team to the first-team.

But does Hewelt realistically have a chance of ousting Jordan Pickford?
It is clear that Everton need a goalkeeper to step up and compete with Pickford, who has become too comfortable as the undisputed number one choice.
Maarten Stekelenburg is the second choice but Marco Silva does not rate him, with Joao Virginia sitting as third choice.
But Hewelt’s latest performance could thrust him into contention as he aims to make his name.
The Polish goalkeeper needs to impress soon, though, as transfermarkt reports that his contract is up this summer.
