Everton clearly dropped the ball on Davy Klaassen after impressive Liverpool display

Everton fans might have been tuning into Liverpool’s clash with Ajax last night hoping to see the Dutch side take advantage of a Liverpool side depleted by recent injury trouble.

However, that did not end up proving to be the case, as Nicolas Tagliafico’s own goal proved crucial in a 1-0 win for Liverpool.

It was a tough game against Erik ten Hag’s side, who had plenty of chances of their own to come away with a win.

One of the key players for Ajax was also a familiar face to Everton fans.

Davy Klaassen was one of Ajax’s best players and so nearly scored a stunning equaliser at the start of the second half.

The 27-year-old smashed a shot from long-range which hit the inside of the post but bounced out from Adrian’s goal.

Everton fans will undoubtedly have been surprised by Klaassen’s display, considering his forgettable stint at Goodison Park.

The Toffees spent a reported (BBC) £23.6 million signing Klaassen in the summer of 2017, after his impressive form with Ajax the season previous.

However, he arrived the same summer as Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson and Everton planned on using him as a number 10. When he did get a chance to play, Klaassen did not impress and he was shipped out to Werder Bremen after just one regretful season.

Now, back at his boyhood club, it is clear to see what Klaassen does bring, Genuine game intelligence and a formidable engine which Everton simply did not harness.

Right now, with a midfield blessed with the likes of Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure, and Andre Gomes, Everton would also find no room for the Dutch star.

But based on this display, it is hard to see why Everton could not get the best out of Klaassen during a fairly turgid period of play for the Toffees.

Evertonians will just hope he can find the right side of the post when he returns to Liverpool with his new team later in the campaign.
