Could Everton starlet Anthony Gordon earn baptism of fire against Liverpool?

The 18-year-old has been on the bench for the last two first-team fixtures.

Everton will face a thankless task this evening when they make the short trip across Stanley Park to face Liverpool.

The Toffees are only two points outside the Premier League drop zone after a torrid start to 2019/20.

It’s fair to say that Marco Silva is on the brink at Goodison Park and he desperately needs a positive result tonight.

Team selection has been a gripe from some supporters this season.

Tom Davies has been a regular in the team this season, whilst Mason Holgate and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were signed by Everton as teenagers have also been frequent inclusions.

The latest Merseyside-derby could hand another academy graduate a real baptism of fire.

Anthony Gordon has been on the bench for the last two games without entering the action.

The Liverpool-born attacker has risen through the ranks at Goodison Park. This season he has netted six goals and registered three assists, leading to Silva placing him in his squad.

There will come a time when the 18-year-old is unleashed by his boss. As with any young player, Silva will hope to pick the right moment and that could be against the Champions of Europe.

Interest

The Sun (15th November; page 74) have previously linked Gordon with a £5 million switch to Dortmund.

It was claimed that the teenager would only leave if he felt he wouldn’t get a chance in the first-team at Everton.

It’s probably not a coincidence that since those reports, Silva has chosen to slowly blend him into his first-team squad.

Gordon is extremely highly-rated and looks mightily close to his first senior appearance since a very brief Europa League cameo two years ago.

Featuring against Liverpool could be a dream come true for the youngster. Given the club’s current predicament, Silva could endear himself to the supporters a little bit by handing Gordon a chance to shine.
