Everton 3-0 Southampton: Three things we learnt

Lukaku is key for Everton’s slim European chances

Another Everton victory and another Everton goal for Romelu Lukaku; it seems to be a running theme this season that the Belgian is involved one way or another if his side wins.

After his goal against Southampton Lukaku has now been involved in 15 Premier League goals this season, scoring 11 himself – by comparison, no other Everton player has been involved in more than five goals since the season began in September.

Koeman himself has made it clear that he sees Lukaku as a big part of Everton’s future, trying to tie up a new contract for the 23-year-old, and if they can secure this over January then it is feasible to believe that Lukaku will go from strength to strength as the current campaign goes on.

Although Everton sit six points behind Manchester United in sixth place, it’s not completely out of the question that the Blues can make a late charge for the European spots, and with Lukaku in red-hot form it could give Koeman’s side an outside chance come May.
